X-treme Slug Racing in Joyce Wahington, August 4, 2018.

And the winner is .... Black Berry by an antenna.  The winner paid off 1-0.

We raced into town to beat the 12:30 closure of the highway.  There would be a detour around Joyce during the big parade.  Needless to say we made it and had time to cruise the art show and eat some pie before things got started.

People came from all over the world to see the X-treme Slug Racing.  Many stayed for Pie and to take in the art and music scene.

These two entertained us while we waited in line for pie.  They had a lot of heart and sang a very appropriate tune.

Listening to them sing made getting the heck out of there with our pie even sweeter.

This is the line for black berry pie.  They bake over 200 pies for the festival.  They are done in batches of 30 at the high school.

They pick the berries the year before baking them in pies.  Pickers are paid $5/lb to bring local berries that are frozen so that there is a good supply for next years pies.

Yuuuuuumy!!!!!

After pie it was time for the parade to start.  You could hear the bagpipes coming from long way off.

What is this car?  One rumor is it started as a Tucker.  It also looks like it could be a '49 Mercury Coupe

The best float of the parade is only available on video.  Sequim's Irrigation Festival Royalty aka the

The Poulsbo Vikings Sons of Norway were a big hit at the parade and took home several X-treme Slug Racing t-shirts.

They love to scare the children and the children love to be scared.

The Strait Air VW club is apparently quite exclusive.  There were only the three of them, but maybe the others broke down on the way.

Olympic Peninsula has more than it's share of zombies and vampires.  The locals enjoy hunting them because they fight back.

In the upwardly mobile world of the Olympic Peninsula, young couples are moving to the woods to make their of living the logging life a reality.

Time to get the party started.

The donation window is closing, get your wagers in.

The excitement is growing in the crowd and the slugs are readied for the race.

The field was down to 11 with none being the odds on favorite.

Over $300 dollars was raised for the firefighters.  Notice that #11 has only one supporter and that's Weavie who put a $1 on each one.

The 2017 champion had first choice for picking a mount.

She chose this fine runner as ...

But would she repeat in the 2018 Battle for Arugula?

In the picture above you can see the slugs in their stalls just before the race.  In the video below you can see the excitement as the starting yell goes off and they race for the finish line: Slug's in the Starting Gate

The crowd goes wild.

There was time for a beer between the opening yell and the finish line.  The line judge stayed on the job in case there was a sprinter.

Approximately 30 minutes into the race, Black Berry made his move to the outside.  He found a gap and slimed between Scout's Honor and Slug Biscuit to take the lead.  He kept slipping out of his jockey jersey.

Susan Saranwrap who had qualified for the #12 spot, but had been eliminated due to a drunk score keeper, took her revenge.  She slid onto the field, first crossing the finish line backward, sweeping across the outer band before crossing the finish line again (in the right direction) to get to the beer incentive.  This woke up Black Berry who had been resting after her initial sprint.

Black Berry, #11, raced across the finish line, uncontested.

The winner!  Weavie had gone to move her car closer to the action and missed the exciting finish.  Sam has the winner on his hand, but hidden from view.

After the excitement and craziness of the big festival, peace returned to the Peninsula forests as quickly as it left.

No slugs were harmed in the race and all were returned to the wild to stud.
